Local Lions Club Celebrates It's 50th Anniversary

The Lions Club of West Pennant Hills-Cherrybrook has reached an impressive milestone in its long history of community service by celebrating its Golden Anniversary at a gala dinner at the Madison Centre, Dural.

The first Lions International club was formed in Australia at Lismore in 1947. Ten years later in 1957 the Lions Club of Epping Eastwood was formed. Its major project was the INALA school at West Pennant Hills . As the Epping Eastwood club entered the 1960’s they found it difficult to maintain support for INALA. They then formed The Lions Club of West Pennant Hills on 28th April 1964 to continue assistance. It is 50 years this month since the first charter dinner was celebrated.

The Club’s Charter President was the late Hills Shire Councillor, Don Moore. He was a great club Member for 39 years until his death in 2003.

The West Pennant Hills-Cherrybrook Club has an impressive record of public service locally, nationally and internationally over its 50 years since founding. It has completed over 1600 projects and raised over $2.0 million in cash and in kind.

Among its projects, the Club is still supporting INALA (continuously) for 50 years), supported the Red Cross Blood Bank from 1966 to 2012 when collections at Pennant Hills were terminated, Lions Save Sight programs for 50 years, many bushfire, flood, storm & earthquake disasters both here and worldwide and the Club today has a major focus in supporting childhood cancer research at Westmead Cancer Research Unit, which has now acknowledged the club as one of its major donors.

We also supported an international health project in Sri Lanka to provide clean drinking water to communities in the North Central Province to enable some of the poorest people on earth to be free of chronic kidney disease. The cost of the reverse osmosis water purification equipment is approximately A$20,000 and will save thousands of lives annually.
