Lions Clubs International (LCI) is an international, non-political service organisation founded 24 October 1916 in Evansville, Indiana USA by Dr. William Perry Woods. The organisation subsequently evolved as an international service organisation in 1917 by Mr Melvin Jones, who was a 38-year-old Chicago business leader. Mr Jones served as the Lions organisational Secretary & Treasurer in its formative years.
The Lions headquarters is now domiciled in Oak Brook, Illinois. The Lions motto is “We Serve” our communities. As at January 2020 Lions had over 46,000 clubs worldwide with more than 1.4 million members. Lions is represented in more than 200 countries throughout the world.
The LIONS acronym also stands for Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nations’ Safety.
