What an incredible event it turned out to be. The inaugural Lions Junior Public Speaking Program competing for the Bendigo Bank Shield was a resounding success. Some thirty five students from Yr1 to Yr8 were involved on Sunday November 10, organised by the West Pennant Hills & Cherrybrook Lions Club. Students were presented with a prepared speech section and challenged by impromptu style, sight-unseen topics, in various age categories. The standard was exceptional, and the huge audience were entertained by the thoroughly well-prepared and organised participants. A big thank you to local judges, teachers Claire Ormiston (chair), Jonathan Atkin, Karen Smyth, Margaret Mackay and Janette Fraser, who had a difficult job adjudicating such talent.
The program aimed to enhance self-esteem and build confidence as well as encourage leadership skills. Every student received an award and personalised feedback from the judges. We were fortunate to have the outstanding services of Satish Keerthi and Aparna Sallakonda. The event would not have been possible save for the exceptional support provided by Gary Mangan, staff and directors of the Galston Community Branch of the Bendigo Bank.
The inaugural winners of the Lions Junior Public Speaking Bendigo Shield went to YMC, the Young Masters Club. A big thank you to the local primary schools who showed great interest. Special mention should be made of the wonderful individual successes from West Pennant Hills and Arcadia Public Schools, with great input from staff members Jane Scott and Sharon O’Brien.
